HaCC Public Lecture: Josephine Baker’s Secret War by Hanna Diamond

May 27 @ 2:00 pm 4:00 pm

HACC Annual Lecture

This year’s Histories and Cultures of Conflict Annual Lecture will be delivered by Professor Hanna Diamond (Cardiff University). The lecture, entitled ‘Josephine Baker’s Secret War’, focuses on her latest book, published with Yale University Press.

Professor Diamond is an expert on the social and cultural history of France during the Second World War and memory of this period.  She has a particular interest in gender and in reconstructing people’s everyday experiences of these traumatic events.

Her latest work tells the full story of Josephine Baker’s actions for the French and Allied powers in World War Two. Drawing on previously unseen material, Diamond reveals the vital role Baker played throughout the war, from counterintelligence work for the Allied landings in North Africa to serving in the French Air Force in 1944–45. A woman of colour operating in a white male environment, Baker exploited her celebrity to enable her war work across France, Spain, Portugal, North Africa, and the Middle East..

The event will take place at Grosvenor East Building, Manchester Metropolitan University
