ECR Workshop – Histories and Cultures of Conflict – 4 March 2026
March 4 @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

The Histories and Cultures of Conflict (HaCC) research group at Manchester Metropolitan University invites proposals from Early Career Researchers for a workshop on ‘Histories and Cultures of Conflict’. Papers should concern histories of, or historical approaches to, conflict broadly defined, from warfare to civil disorder and political violence, from the ancient to the modern period.
Papers may speak to the research specialisms of the group:
- Aftermaths of conflict and/or veterans’ histories;
- Cultural approaches to the history of war and violence;
- Arms and armaments in peace and wartime;
- The history of political violence, political extremism, and terrorism;
- Digital humanities and conflict;
- The challenges and dynamics of new modes of warfare
Proposals for papers on other topics in the history of conflict will also be considered.
Our goal is to bring together emerging scholars of historical conflict in a constructive and supportive environment. Applicants should have recently completed their PhD, or be nearing completion, and considering further study or research. Participants will be offered the chance to take part in a mentoring scheme, pairing them with a member of HaCC. A small number of bursaries will be available to support attendance by UK-based scholars.
Proposals for 20-minute papers should include a title, a 300-word abstract, and a one-page CV with current contact details. The deadline for proposals is 10 January 2026.
Please send proposals to Dr Chris Millington, c.millington@mmu.ac.uk
