Imagining Histories and Cultures of Conflict
A Workshop for Early Career Researchers
Manchester Metropolitan University
Wednesday 10 March 2027
The Histories and Cultures of Conflict (HaCC) research group at Manchester Metropolitan University invites proposals from Early Career Researchers for a workshop on ‘Imagining Histories and Cultures of Conflict’. Papers should concern histories of, or historical approaches to, the imagination of war and violence from any era.
Papers may speak to the following topics:
- Using fiction, narrative history, and critical fabulation to further understand warfare and conflict;
- Depictions and the visual language of arms and armour;
- Understanding the experience of war and conflict through visual sources;
- Imagining war, violence, extremism, and terrorism;
- How modern technologies and creative practices can be used to aid the interpretation of battle and violence.
Submissions on related topics will be considered. Our goal is to bring together emerging scholars of historical conflict in a constructive and supportive environment. Speakers must be either a postgraduate or an early-career researcher, however we warmly invite other academics and students to attend.
This event is free to attend and includes lunch. Additionally, a small number of travel bursaries may be available to support attendance by UK-based scholars.
Proposals for 20-minute papers should include a title, a 300-word abstract, and a one-page CV with current contact details. Deadline for submission is 12th December 2026. Applicants will hear back by the 4th January 2027. Please send proposals to Prof. Chris Millington; c.millington@mmu.ac.uk
