SUMMARY:Imagining Histories and Cultures of Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Call for Papers \n\n\n\nImagining Histories and Cultures of Conflict \n\n\n\nA Workshop for Early Career Researchers \n\n\n\nManchester Metropolitan University \n\n\n\nWednesday 10 March 2027 \n\n\n\nThe Histories and Cultures of Conflict (HaCC) research group at Manchester Metropolitan University invites proposals from Early Career Researchers for a workshop on ‘Imagining Histories and Cultures of Conflict’.  Papers should concern histories of\, or historical approaches to\, the imagination of war and violence from any era. \n\n\n\nPapers may speak to the following topics: \n\n\n\n\nUsing fiction\, narrative history\, and critical fabulation to further understand warfare and conflict;\n\n\n\nDepictions and the visual language of arms and armour;\n\n\n\nUnderstanding the experience of war and conflict through visual sources;\n\n\n\nImagining war\, violence\, extremism\, and terrorism;  \n\n\n\nHow modern technologies and creative practices can be used to aid the interpretation of battle and violence.\n\n\n\n\nSubmissions on related topics will be considered.  Our goal is to bring together emerging scholars of historical conflict in a constructive and supportive environment. Speakers must be either a postgraduate or an early-career researcher\, however we warmly invite other academics and students to attend. \n\n\n\nThis event is free to attend and includes lunch. Additionally\, a small number of travel bursaries may be available to support attendance by UK-based scholars. \n\n\n\nProposals for 20-minute papers should include a title\, a 300-word abstract\, and a one-page CV with current contact details.  Deadline for submission is 12th December 2026. Applicants will hear back by the 4th January 2027.  Please send proposals to Prof. Chris Millington; c.millington@mmu.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Histories of Terrorism and Political Violence
DESCRIPTION:In the last decade\, historical monographs\, essays collections\, and handbooks have shed much light on the study of terrorism and political violence. Yet historians have struggled to make their voices heard in a field whose presentist bias and problem-solving orientation means that scanning past horizons appeals far less than future ones.  \n\n\n\nThe recent upturn in historical scholarship on terrorism and political violence has demonstrated the value that historians can bring to the study of these phenomena.  Historical studies are sensitive to political\, social\, and cultural contexts\, taking into consideration micro-historical factors – those immediate in geographical and temporal terms to the act or movement – and macro-historical factors – words or deeds on a grander temporal or geographical scale\, with a system-shaping regional or global impact.  They appreciate contemporaneous meanings of words and actions and the historical antecedents that informed them. \n\n\n\nBuilding on the success of the 2026 iteration of this conference\, we invite 20-minute papers that take as their focus historical terrorism and political violence\, broadly defined\, as it has existed around the world since 1789.  We welcome papers that consider the subject in its historical context as well as those that concern methodological approaches. \n\n\n\nAbstract submission deadline        1 January 2027 \n\n\n\nNotification of acceptance              15 January 2027 \n\n\n\nConference                                        23 June 2027 \n\n\n\nEmail abstracts and a one-page CV to: \n\n\n\nterrorismconferencemmu@gmail.com
